「書と非書の際」展 主旨」
本企画の発意は、故 中村二柄氏(現代の書芸術 -墨象の世界-『淡交社 刊』著者) と石田淨(京都藝際交流協会理事長)の墨象の世界に関する対話の中で「非文字性の書を前衛書、墨象と呼ぶ場合が多い」という中村二柄氏の提言をきっかけに現代の書芸術を「書とは何なのか」「書と文字はどう関わるのか」「書家と画家の線はどう違うのか」等々、「藝際」の視角から展覧会、シンポジウムを通して検証する事を目的に２００３年から企画開催されたものです。 長い伝統を持つ「書」芸術と「非書」の際(きわ) を探ることの中から新しい芸術 が生まれるのではないかという命題こそが「書と非書の際」なのです。

Exhibition purpose:
The initiative of this project is based on the dialogue between Nihei Nakamura (author of "Contemporary calligraphy - the world of ink paintings" published by Tankosha) and Jo Ishida (Chairman of the Kyoto Society for Inter-Art Exchange, JARFO) about the world of ink paintings.
In relation to Nihei Nakamura's reasoning that "In many cases, the non-textual calligraphy is considered the avant-garde", Jo Ishida debate about the modern calligraphy art. What is calligraphy? Which is the relation between calligraphy and letters? Which is the difference between painters and calligraphers?
Since 2003, Jo Ishida intends to inspect that from the perspective of "Geisai (Inter-Art)" holding exhibitions and symposiums.
"Calligraphy and not calligraphy's KIWA" exhibition is based on the thesis that new art expressions could arise from the research about the overlaps between calligraphy and non-calligraphy which have both a long tradition.
